In an effort to promote cricket and attract regional and international tournaments, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis upgraded the facilities and infrastructure at Warner Park. Financed with a grant of US$4 million from the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF), the project commenced in 2013 as St. Kitts prepared to fulfill the requirements to host matches during the Limacol sponsored 2014 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) cricket tournament.
The major work carried out included the upgrade of the Stadium and the installation of field lights, a Jumbotron LED video display scoreboard and replay screen and an 800kw back-up generator. Having met international cricket standards, Warner Park was selected as the venue for the semi-final and final matches of the CPL cricket tournament. It is expected that the grounds will also be used by visiting teams to practise for competitions hosted by other countries. With upgraded facilities, Warner Park can now serve multi-purposes and allow for events usually held during the day to take place at night.
The transformation of the Warner Park Cricket Stadium into a facility with the capacity to host regional and international matches will help promote cricket as a professional sport among the youth, and position the Federation to develop sports tourism as a niche market.
